ROZSIKA is one of my favorite projects. Avitall Gerstetter, cantor of the Jewish Community Berlin approached me in 2018, if I was interested to illustrate her story of her Grandaunt Rozsika who got murdered by the Germans in the Holocaust. Unlike the real destiny of the girls however, the story writes an imagined new life for them, asking: “What would their lives have been like, if there hadn’t been the Holocaust?” I instantly said yes. This way of giving the victims back an identity that is beyond being remembered as a victim and giving them – a life! That is a beautiful new way to cope with this sensitive part of our history and honor the millions of lives that were deleted unlived.
